This guide describes how you create an installation media on a DVD for use when installing Windows 10.


To be able to create the installation media you need an empty DVD-disc.


The guide is only applicable if you use Windows 7 or a newer version. If you on the other hand use Windows XP or Windows Vista, you will have to follow the guide below.

 1. Start by clicking the link below to be sent to the official Windows 10 download page.



2. Upon arriving at the page you must click the blue ’Download tool now’ button to download the ‘Media Creation Tool, which is the program used to download and create the installation media.

 3. Download vary from browser to browser, but in this guide, we have chosen to use Microsoft Edge. This means that some differences might occur in accordance to which browser you use.


Click the ’Save’ button for your standard folder. This usually is the ‘Transfers’ folder. If you wish to save the file elsewhere click the ‘Save as’ button instead.


When the file is downloaded you will need to click the ‘Run’ button to activate the ‘Media Creation Tool’. If you use another browser, you might have to access the saved file in order to initiate the tool from there.

4. If a pop up appears asking you; ‘Will you allow this app to make changes on this device?’ click ‘Allow’ to proceed.

 5. In order to be able to download and create the installation media you first have to accept Microsoft’s licensing terms for the use of the ‘Media Creation Tool’


Click ’Accept’.

6. As this guide focuses on how to install Windows 10 on your computer by establishing an installation media on a DVD you will have to mark ‘Create Installation media….’ and click ‘Next’.

 7. Now you have to choose which language and architectural settings you want to create the installation media for. The box setting the computer to ‘use the recommended settings for this for this computer’ may be checked and you will have to uncheck it in order to change the fixed settings.


Language: Here you have the opportunity to choose your desired language of installation – it is possible to add other languages after installing Windows 10.


Edition: It is no longer possible to change edition after the publication of Windows 10 version 1709 and the edition will be known only as ”Windows 10


Architecture: Here you have to choose between 32-bit or 64-bit, as a starting point 64-bit is recommended for all newer computers.


Choose the wanted settings and click ’Next’.

 8. Now you have the opportunity to choose the media you want to use. You can choose between USB-flash drive or ISO-file for burning onto a DVD.


In this guide we have chosen to create the installation media on a USB-flash drive and now is the time to insert the drive you want to create the installation media on.


Mark ’ISO-file’ and hereafter click ‘Next’

 9. Choose the destination for the ISO-file and click ‘Save’.

 10. The installation files will be downloaded and following this the installation media will be created on your USB-flash drive.


This may take a while depending on how fast your internet connection is and your computer. Use the time to take a break from the computer.

11. When the ISO-flie has been downloaded you will receive a message saying that it is ready to be burned onto the DVD...


Insert the empty DVD into the computer and click ’Open DVD-burner’ to be directed to the Windows burn disc image program.

12. Click ’Burn’ and wait for the installation media to be burned onto the DVD.

  1. When the process is done you will be presented with the option to end

Click ’Close’ to be directed back to ’Media Creation Tool’

  1. Your Windows 10 installation DVD is now ready for use.


Click ‘Finish’ to end ‘Media Creation Tool’.
