In this guide we describe the process of creating an installation media on a USB-flash drive for installing Windows 10

 

In order to create the installation media, you will need an empty USB-flash drive with a minimum of 8 GB memory.

 

The guide is only applicable if you use Windows 7 or a newer version. In case you use Windows XP or Windows Vista you will have to follow the guide below.

1. Start by clicking on the link below to be connected to the official page for Windows 10 downloads.

2. When on the page you must click the blue ‘Download tool now’ button to get the ‘Media Creation Tool’ that is a program designedfor downloading and creating the installation media.

3. Download vary from browser to browser, but in this guide, we have chosen to use Microsoft Edge. This means that some differences might occur in accordance to which browser you use.

 

Click the ’Save’ button for your standard folder. This usually is the ‘Transfers’ folder. If you wish to save the file elsewhere click the ‘Save as’ button instead.

 

When the file is downloaded you will need to click the ‘Run’ button to activate the ‘Media Creation Tool’. If you use another browser, you might have to access the saved file in order to initiate the tool from there.

4. If a pop up appears asking you; ‘Will you allow this app to make changes on this device?’ click ‘Allow’ to proceed.

5. In order to be able to download and create the installation media you first have to accept Microsoft’s licensing terms for the use of the ‘Media Creation Tool’

 

Click ’Accept’.

6. As this guide focuses on how to install Windows 10 on your computer by establishing an installation media on a USB-key you will have to mark ‘Create Installation media….’ and click ‘Next’.

7. Now you must choose which language and architectural settings you want to create the installation media for.

 

Language: Here you have the opportunity to choose your desired language of installation – it is possible to add other languages after installing Windows 10.

 

Edition: It is no longer possible to change edition after the publication of Windows 10 version 1709 and the edition will be known only as ”Windows 10

 

Architecture: Here you have to choose between 32-bit or 64-bit, as a starting point 64-bit is recommended for all newer computers.

 

Choose the wanted settings and click ’Next’.

8. Now you have the opportunity to choose the media you want to use. You can choose between USB-flash drive or ISO-file for burning onto a DVD.

 

In this guide we have chosen to create the installation media on a USB-flash drive and now is the time to insert the drive you want to create the installation media on.

 

Mark ’USB-flash drive’ and hereafter click ‘Next’

 9. Locate and choose your USB-flash drive on the list and click ‘Next’

 

 

NOTE: If your USB-flash drive does not appear on the list you might attempt to click ’Update list of drives’ to see if it appears.

10. The installation files will be downloaded and following this the installation media will be created on your USB-flash drive.

 

This may take a while depending on how fast your internet connection is and your computer. Use the time to take a break in from the computer.

11. When the process has finished, and your installation media has been created you will receive a message saying that your USB-flash drive is ready.

 

Click ‘Finish’ to terminate ‘Media Creation Tool’.
